Your dog is a ‘social creature’, and needs to have a strong
emotional bond with compassionate, understanding leader – that’s you, the owner!
When the human-dog bond is weak, and
the dog doesn’t see an obvious human leader, he will feel that it’s up to him to be the leader in his ‘pack’ – your family.
That’s when the trouble starts. Your dog, seeing himself as the leader, begins making decisions –often poor ones- on his own!
He might decide that it is OK to take food from your kitchen counter, because he’s been given a tid-bit from there now and
then when dinner was being prepared. Begging at the dinner table might be acceptable in his eyes as well, because someone
always slips him a tasty piece of food! He might understand that it is all right to jump up on people because he gets all
sorts of attention when he does! He might decide to ignore you when you ask him to ‘come’, because whenever you do, you are
angry and yell at him. Why should he come when called? Just who is training whom?
When the human-dog bond is strong,
and the dog understands that the owner is the leader, he will be more willing to listen, obey, and behave appropriately! Your
dog will understand that acceptable behavior will be rewarded, while unacceptable behavior will not.
